About
The Self Care Collective
About Our ‘Why’
‘”Shouting ‘self-care’ at people who actually need community care is how we fail people”
– Nakita Valerio
There are many “why’s” that led to our creation.
Self care can be lonely, boring, repetitive or feel like another item on the to-do list.
Self care services often address surface-level parts of us and only offer temporary relief without touching the deeper layers of who we truly are. Meanwhile, more comprehensive mental, emotional or spiritual care can be expensive or inaccessible, leaving those who need it the most without support. Further, the concept of Self care can unfairly place the responsibility on individuals to address larger systemic challenges
At The Self Care Collective, we want to fill a gap and tackle as many of these challenges as we can in one fell swoop.
We deeply believe that true well-being and healing of all layers of the Self is achieved through being cared for in community, not in isolation.
About The Visions and Intentions of the Self Care Collective
We envision:
– a room full of people sharing in the experience of holistic Self care, valuing mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual health as much as physical health
– a community that grows like a snowball rolling down a hill, gathering momentum as connection grows.
– a space where folks feel held by the energy of the collective and where they can feel seen in who they really are.
– opportunities for one to rekindle their relationship to the Self and create new and meaningful connections with others.
– a community of entrepreneurs working together to grow their businesses and share their gifts
We intend:
– to create inclusive and accessible offerings that support folks in caring for all layers of the Self through the power of community.
– to offer practices that allow participants to return to more organic, embodied and traditional ways of healing: through sound, movement, sharing, expression, song, dance, laughter, yoga, and more.
– to ensure we always have a free or affordable offering on our calendar each week, as we believe health and healing are human rights, not luxuries.
– to reinvest our profits back into community programming – including our own – so that our services can remain accessible and inclusive for as many people as possible.
About Our Guides
All of our guides are independent entrepreneurs who feel called to offer their gifts within The Self Care Collective. Some of our guides are regulars, and others are special guests. You can find more information about our guides, their services and where else you can work with them by clicking on their events on the calendar to see more information.
Co-Create with The Self Care Collective
We believe in an energy exchange that feels reciprocal. Rather than ‘hire’ people, we create partnerships and collaborate with our practitioners. We share the responsibility and ownership of building up our shared community. If you are a guide whose offerings align with what we are doing here, and who would like to co-create with The Heart Center through The Self Care Collective, read our Info Guide or complete our Alignment Form.
About Our Name
While our name, The Self Care Collective, might initially suggest an individualized or ‘trendy’ focus on self-care, it actually represents something much deeper.
Our name itself carries the core intention of The Self Care Collective:
collectively caring for the Self.
The Self is capitalized throughout our writing on purpose, as want to emphasize our focus on the whole Self, the authentic core or essence of who we are – as a “me” and also as a more unified, universal “we”.
Care, although perhaps obvious, reflects our intention to truly nurture ourselves, each other, and our community in a heart-centered way.
And finally, the word Collective highlights three key threads weaved into our business:
1) The power of community:
We know when individuals come together, the collective energy, support, accountability and ideas amplifies individual inspiration, growth and healing.
2) Our interconnectedness to the Collective:
We are not separate from each other. Our health and wellbeing are intertwined within the whole, and many of our challenges of taking care of ourselves is related to collective health. We must tend to the Collective, too
3) Our Collaborative Structure:
We co-create our services with a variety of facilitators who bring their unique gifts, in order to reflect a diverse variety of practices and ways of being.
